Roy’s first job involved  wandering the aísles and shelves of the hardware store. Roy was working for a company installing cabinets, and didn’t know half of what he needed when he walked into the store. “Now I walk into Home Depot, I see the tools, and I know exactly what to do with them.” 

That hands-on learning would later launch a small business.  Today, Roy owns and runs P&R Crew Power Services. The company installs custom closets, garages, and kitchens. They work on larger projects for partners like The Container Store.  

Roy recently secured a contract for a home remodeling program with the City of Tampa, but knew he would need the working capital to staff up for the opportunity. “I know how important credit history is… and a microloan is a great first step.” 

Partnering with Ascendus

Roy’s relationship with Ascendus began years ago when he referred clients in his role as a business consultant with Hillsborough County. When the time came to build credit for one of his own ventures and access growth capital, he turned to the lender he already trusted. 

“Everything lined up. I said, I’ll call someone who knows me, who knows I’m responsible — and that was Ascendus.” 

Through the Small Business Catalyst Fund — a joint initiative with Fifth Third Bank and Community Reinvestment Fund, USA — Roy received the working capital needed to strengthen P&R Crew Power Services and build credit. He’ll use the loan to hire two new staff members for the company as he takes on larger projects and expands operations.
