Rich Le: Designing for True Resilience

“Ascendus is invested, not just financially, but in the growth and sustainability of my business.”

As any entrepreneur knows, the path of a small business is rarely a straight line. Shortly after launching into his scaling phase, the market threw unprecedented waves of turbulence his way.

This is the story of how a flexible financial partnership, a strategic pivot, and a savings of $500 a month kept a mission-driven dream alive. Ascendus had provided Rich with the capital to consolidate debt, gaining him the crucial “breathing room” needed to navigate the storm.

The Challenge: When the Market Shifts overnight

Crossing over into 2025 introduced massive volatility for small businesses across the country. For Rich, sudden regulatory changes and executive orders heavily impacted his core client sectors: life sciences, healthcare, and nonprofits.

“The problem was the sheer uncertainty. Clients didn’t know what would happen next, so they couldn’t make strong decisions or long-term plans. Between January and September, I had to pivot my business model and concepts at least five different times just to keep up.” — Rich Le

By July 2025, the financial strain hit a breaking point. After burning through his cash reserves to protect his team, Rich had to make the painful decision to let his employees go and cut all possible operational costs. Money was only going out, and his original monthly loan payments were becoming crushing. He was on the verge of closing the studio entirely to look for a traditional job.

The Turning Point: The Crucial Value of $500

Instead of stepping away, Rich proactively reached out to Ascendus. He reconnected with Andrea Ierace (SVP of Lending), who immediately mobilized to help.

Ascendus restructured and extended his existing loan, dropping his monthly payment by roughly $500 to $600.

  • Not Just a Transaction: “It wasn’t a massive structural change for a large lender, but that $500 was everything to me,” Rich reflects. “It was literally the dividing line between keeping my doors open or shutting down. Ascendus chose to be a real partner.”
  • Buying Mental Space: This reduction dramatically lowered his burn rate, buying Rich the invaluable asset every struggling founder needs: time to think. It allowed him to stop panic-reacting to the crisis and focus on long-term positioning and marketing.

The strategy paid off. On December 23, 2025, Rich received two unexpected emails from prospective clients. Those conversations snowballed into a wave of new project inquiries that successfully filled his pipeline for the first half of 2026.

The Ascension: Unlocking Government Contracts

With a stabilized pipeline, Rich leveraged his new runway to target a massive milestone: government contracting.

For a lean creative agency, putting together complex state proposals is an incredibly high-risk gamble of time and resources. But the stability provided by the loan restructuring gave Rich the capacity to see the rigorous process through. Today, the results speak for themselves:

  • Certified Prime Contractor: Cntxt.agency is now officially certified as a Prime Contractor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, bypassing traditional institutional barriers.
  • City of Boston TA Provider: The agency secured a key certification from the City of Boston as a Technical Assistance provider.
  • Institutional Momentum: Cntxt.agency is already working as a trusted subcontractor for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
  • The Exclusive Mass Buys Expo: After two years of being turned away due to strict eligibility requirements, Rich has been officially invited to table at the prestigious Mass Buys Expo this October, positioning his firm directly in front of state and municipal buyers.

For government agencies, nonprofits, and mission-driven organizations in Massachusetts, these certifications mean working with Cntxt.agency is now a streamlined, procurement-compliant path to world-class design.

Looking Ahead: Paying Resiliency Forward

Now in his fifth year of business, Rich is using his survival lessons to empower other entrepreneurs. Furthermore, keeping true to his community roots, Rich co-founded 1 Hour Party alongside fellow Ascendus client Nagib Charles (Charles Advisory Group). Born out of their own frustrations with traditional, transactional networking, this nonprofit helps local founders build reliable support ecosystems based on authentic chemistry and deep relationship.

Ascendus in Three Words

When asked how he views Ascendus after navigating both rapid growth and economic survival, Rich summarizes the relationship in three words: “Collaborative, Hustling, Institution.”

“They are collaborative because they treat you like a human being and sit down to talk when things get tough. They are hustling because they move with an agile, quick-moving energy you’ll never find at a traditional bank. And they are an institution because they manage to keep that flexible, compassionate, human framework alive despite operating at a massive national scale.”
