Chronicles from the 2025 Microfinance Impact Collaborative Convening

At Ascendus, we believe that real change happens when people come together with purpose, honesty, and a shared vision. Last week, we had the privilege of joining fellow industry leaders in Washington, D.C. and Warrenton, VA for the 2025 Microfinance Impact Collaborative (MIC) Convening—a multi-day journey rooted in reflection, connection, and bold collective action.

Across every conversation, one message stood out: small business resilience demands shared commitment, courageous planning, and deeper collaboration.

Day 1: Welcoming Connections in Washington, D.C.

We kicked off the convening with a warm welcome dinner at Residents Café and Bar. As MIC members gathered over shared stories and laughter, the spirit of connection set the tone for the days ahead. It wasn’t just about reconnecting—it was about re-committing to a future where financial ascension is possible for all.

Day 2: Grounding in Purpose and Transitioning to Airlie House

Wednesday began at the Aspen Institute offices, where we geared up for meetings across D.C., engaging directly with key stakeholders on the challenges and opportunities facing our field.

After a day of thoughtful dialogue, we transitioned to Airlie House in Warrenton, VA—a change of setting that allowed space for deeper conversations, relationship-building, and reflection by the lake.

Day 3: Risk, Resilience, and Reimagining the Future

Thursday was dedicated to candid conversations about the realities our sector faces today—and tomorrow.

  • Portfolio Risk & Economic Trends: Guided by Scale Link’s insights, we examined trends in portfolio quality and discussed strategies to address rising risks in a changing economic landscape.
  • Funding Challenges: With Scale Link and Relman Colfax, we explored how shifts in federal policy could impact future funding, and how we must proactively adapt.
  • Legal Risks: We unpacked the growing legal challenges affecting CDFIs and the communities we serve—and reaffirmed our commitment to equity, advocacy, and action.

The serious work of the day gave way to an evening at 3 Foxes Winery—a reminder that resilience also comes from rest, joy, and community.

Day 4: Planning Together for Collective Impact

Our final day turned ideas into action.

  • The Future of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA): We envisioned the possibilities ahead—and the strategies needed to safeguard inclusive access to capital.
  • Shared Solutions: From advocacy to joint fundraising to new financial products, we brainstormed collaborative initiatives that can strengthen our collective impact.
  • Action Planning: Before heading home, we outlined priorities to carry our momentum forward.

Throughout the convening, one truth became clearer than ever: when entrepreneurs rise, communities rise. And this way up, we all rise.

What’s Next?

We returned home with fresh insights, renewed partnerships, and a deeper belief in the power of collaboration. The path ahead may be challenging, but by working together, we’re carving new ways forward—toward a more equitable and resilient future for small businesses everywhere.

Let’s keep building, this way up!
