The New Website Audience: People and AI Shopping Agents

For years, business websites were built mainly with one visitor in mind: a person. That’s still true, but a second visitor is showing up more and more: an AI shopping agent, searching, comparing, and recommending on a customer’s behalf.

The businesses that get ready now will be easier to find later.

What’s actually changing

A growing number of customers now let an AI assistant do the first round of research for them: search a few options, compare prices and reviews, and narrow the list before a person ever looks at a website directly. That assistant reads a website differently than a person does. It’s looking for clear, structured facts, not just a compelling headline.

What this means for your website

  1. Say what you sell in plain language. Clear product and service descriptions help both a person scanning quickly and an AI agent summarizing your business accurately.
  2. Keep pricing visible and current. Vague or outdated pricing is easy for a person to shrug off. It’s often a reason an AI agent skips a business entirely in favor of one with clear numbers.
  3. Spell out your policies. Returns, hours, service areas, and booking steps. If it isn’t written down somewhere on your site, an assistant summarizing your business can’t reference it.
  4. Let your reviews and reputation show. AI agents weigh outside signals, not just your own claims. Reviews, local press, and third-party listings all feed into whether you get recommended.

None of this replaces good design or a strong brand voice. It’s an additional layer: the same clarity that helps a rushed customer also helps the assistant doing research on their behalf.

A website built for both audiences, people and their AI assistants, is more likely to be found, compared favorably, and chosen. That’s worth investing in now, before it’s the only way customers look.
